Mary and Sophie's 3rd Birthday Room

The girls turned three on Thursday, October 7th. They had preschool that day and Peter and I stayed home and put some canopies on the beds, then I put up some new curtains and a table and chairs. I thought they would like it, and I think I was right. It was fun to see their reaction!

We had a birthday party today at Bounce n Play. It was the first time there for us and a little overwhelming, but I think everyone had a good time. Mary and Sophie had a super fun birthday!

Summer Vacation - June 2010

I realized on my post about a month ago I said I'd have more vacation pictures, so here they are. These were taken at Buckroe Beach in Hampton, VA, outside our vacation condo in Williamsburg and at Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

Peter should win some type of "father for girls" award - he took them to ToysRUs recently and bought a trunk full of dress up clothes. They have been enjoying them and modeled a few looks for me the other day. Mary wanted pictures outside, but Sophie said it was too hot.

Fortunately the new is starting to wear off of the trunk of dress up clothes. It was every morning Sophie would wake up and first thing out of her mouth - "I want to be a fairy princess!" After about a week of this I successfully convinced her that fairy princesses have to use the potty first thing when they get up before putting on wings (and sometimes the wings are forgotten after the excitement of flushing).

Now that I've turned to the subject of potty training, I can tell a story of wearing big girl pants on "Daddy Day" (when I am at work and girls are with Peter). Sophie had an accident at NAPA but averted crisis. She left Peter at the counter, then came back and told him she pee-peed in her pants. Then she took him to the spot where she had pulled down her pants and peed on the floor, right beside an orange cone. So Peter just went back to the counter and asked if they had any paper towels, wiped it up and the NAPA clerks were none the wiser. After hearing the story, I told him about an orange cone at Pen Park playground where the bouncy airplane used to be. The girls asked what it was and I told them that the cone meant caution and to stay away from that spot. Could that have influenced her decision to leave the puddle there? I like to think so.

The Doctor is In

Well, we recently got back from vacation and I'll try to post some more pictures from that soon. But right now I have a story I'd like to share and decided I'd do that instead of using the last few minutes at work to start something I can't finish.

The girls have each had their own doctor's kit for a while now, and shortly after, Sophie started her own practice and has an office in the front bedroom of our house (Mary and Sophie's room). She'll often go to her office to get a bit of work done or you'll catch her and Mary taking turns listening to each others hearts (and saying, "ba boom, ba boom").

This story takes place after nap time in the girls' room (um, Dr. Sophie's office). I'm just hanging out talking to them and Sophie starts to look at my ear, then decides she needs to take a closer look.

Sophie: Mommy, I need to listen to your ear. I'll be right back. (turns around in doorway, looking serious) I'm a doctor.

Mary (while Sophie's getting her kit): Mommy, I have a boo boo here on my foot.

Mommy: Well, the doctor will be back in a minute. Why don't you let her take a look at it? (Sophie returns.) After you look at my ear, could you take a look at my friend Mary? She said she has a boo boo.

After examining my ear, Sophie looks for the boo boo, confirms location, taps it with the thermometer. Then she asks Mary if it is better. Mary says yes, and thanks the doctor. Sophie goes back to looking at my ear, and is moving the tool around in it and making noises.

Mommy: Hey, what are you doing to my ear? It's not supposed to make noises! What kind of doctor are you anyway?

Sophie: I'm a stethoscope doctor. (pauses) OK, you're fine, you can walk now.

Mommy: What do you mean walk? You mean you want me to get out of your room?

Sophie: Yes. The doctor is over.

Itchy Singing Mary

This just in - Mary sings Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Yes, I got her on video the first time I saw the whole thing, thank you. I don't expect that to happen again, but it was cool!

Mary has a slight allergy to peanuts and it's been a long time since she was exposed, but we figured it out when she got a rash during the times she had peanut butter. Well, she got one this morning that looked redder throughout the day and the only thing we can link it back to is some ice cream at a restaurant last night. I reminded the girls a few days back about the peanut allergy and said that it made Mary get red splotches all over. Later, Sophie said Mary was going to eat peanut butter and get "polka dots." But then today Mary called it "popcorn" on her knee.

Just in case you are wondering why Mary is itchy with red splotches - she should be fine in the morning. No performances have been canceled.
