Merry Christmas!

Mary and Sophie with "Santa" (Sophie did not think this was the real one)

We have been staying warm and enjoying this time of year. A lot has happened since the last post that obviously was not documented here. If you would like to see more pictures, please visit our facebook page at www.facebook.com/lhoranyi. A lot of you are friends on facebook, I don't know if you have to "friend" me to see pictures or not - maybe not, sometimes I am more lenient than I should be with privacy settings.

We are leaving tomorrow morning to drive down to Georgia for Christmas. This is the first year the girls have had specific requests from Santa, and I think they've kept them pretty reasonable. Mary is probably most excited about getting a doll that pees and poops. They have both been enjoying the holiday season and were in their first Christmas play at church (they were shepherds). They have also learned many Christmas songs and sing them wherever we go. Today Sophie asked to eat Trix cereal for breakfast because it looks like Christmas ornaments. I don't know who is the most excited about Christmas. It might be me.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Mary and Sophie's 3rd Birthday Room

The girls turned three on Thursday, October 7th. They had preschool that day and Peter and I stayed home and put some canopies on the beds, then I put up some new curtains and a table and chairs. I thought they would like it, and I think I was right. It was fun to see their reaction!

We had a birthday party today at Bounce n Play. It was the first time there for us and a little overwhelming, but I think everyone had a good time. Mary and Sophie had a super fun birthday!

Summer Vacation - June 2010

I realized on my post about a month ago I said I'd have more vacation pictures, so here they are. These were taken at Buckroe Beach in Hampton, VA, outside our vacation condo in Williamsburg and at Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

Playing Dress Up

Peter should win some type of "father for girls" award - he took them to ToysRUs recently and bought a trunk full of dress up clothes. They have been enjoying them and modeled a few looks for me the other day. Mary wanted pictures outside, but Sophie said it was too hot.

This is a cross between Snow White and cheerleader look for Mary (wearing Snow White heels).

This was supposed to be a picture of Sophie - Mary ran in front of the camera just when I was pressing the button.

Fairy Princess Sophie

Mary, don't make me use this wand.

Fortunately the new is starting to wear off of the trunk of dress up clothes. It was every morning Sophie would wake up and first thing out of her mouth - "I want to be a fairy princess!" After about a week of this I successfully convinced her that fairy princesses have to use the potty first thing when they get up before putting on wings (and sometimes the wings are forgotten after the excitement of flushing).

Now that I've turned to the subject of potty training, I can tell a story of wearing big girl pants on "Daddy Day" (when I am at work and girls are with Peter). Sophie had an accident at NAPA but averted crisis. She left Peter at the counter, then came back and told him she pee-peed in her pants. Then she took him to the spot where she had pulled down her pants and peed on the floor, right beside an orange cone. So Peter just went back to the counter and asked if they had any paper towels, wiped it up and the NAPA clerks were none the wiser. After hearing the story, I told him about an orange cone at Pen Park playground where the bouncy airplane used to be. The girls asked what it was and I told them that the cone meant caution and to stay away from that spot. Could that have influenced her decision to leave the puddle there? I like to think so.

The Doctor is In

Well, we recently got back from vacation and I'll try to post some more pictures from that soon. But right now I have a story I'd like to share and decided I'd do that instead of using the last few minutes at work to start something I can't finish.

Dr. Sophie at Buckroe Beach, Hampton, VA

The girls have each had their own doctor's kit for a while now, and shortly after, Sophie started her own practice and has an office in the front bedroom of our house (Mary and Sophie's room). She'll often go to her office to get a bit of work done or you'll catch her and Mary taking turns listening to each others hearts (and saying, "ba boom, ba boom").

This story takes place after nap time in the girls' room (um, Dr. Sophie's office). I'm just hanging out talking to them and Sophie starts to look at my ear, then decides she needs to take a closer look.

Sophie: Mommy, I need to listen to your ear. I'll be right back. (turns around in doorway, looking serious) I'm a doctor.

Mary (while Sophie's getting her kit): Mommy, I have a boo boo here on my foot.

Mommy: Well, the doctor will be back in a minute. Why don't you let her take a look at it? (Sophie returns.) After you look at my ear, could you take a look at my friend Mary? She said she has a boo boo.

After examining my ear, Sophie looks for the boo boo, confirms location, taps it with the thermometer. Then she asks Mary if it is better. Mary says yes, and thanks the doctor. Sophie goes back to looking at my ear, and is moving the tool around in it and making noises.

Mommy: Hey, what are you doing to my ear? It's not supposed to make noises! What kind of doctor are you anyway?

Sophie: I'm a stethoscope doctor. (pauses) OK, you're fine, you can walk now.

Mommy: What do you mean walk? You mean you want me to get out of your room?

Sophie: Yes. The doctor is over.

Itchy Singing Mary

This just in - Mary sings Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Yes, I got her on video the first time I saw the whole thing, thank you. I don't expect that to happen again, but it was cool!

Mary has a slight allergy to peanuts and it's been a long time since she was exposed, but we figured it out when she got a rash during the times she had peanut butter. Well, she got one this morning that looked redder throughout the day and the only thing we can link it back to is some ice cream at a restaurant last night. I reminded the girls a few days back about the peanut allergy and said that it made Mary get red splotches all over. Later, Sophie said Mary was going to eat peanut butter and get "polka dots." But then today Mary called it "popcorn" on her knee.

Just in case you are wondering why Mary is itchy with red splotches - she should be fine in the morning. No performances have been canceled.

Pen Park

Mary and Sophie take flight

Finally, spring is just around the corner. We have been enjoying the past several warm days, but it rained all night and will likely rain all this weekend. I am at work today, it is raining outside, rather gloomy inside, and I just got off the phone with someone who will not have her job come Monday. All that stuff is depressing, so for a while I'll think about my fun girls, warm weather and the great playgrounds we have in C'ville. And I figured why not share, it's been a while since I've been on the blog. Happy spring!

The Joy of Painting

Sophie

You know the PBS show, The Joy of Painting, the one with the afro guy... it is still on the air. We catch it sometimes while flipping through with the remote and just have to pause for a moment, because it just has a calming effect. I think painting has the same effect on the girls as well. I've always wondered though, how many people do you think are out there watching that show with a canvas and a palette in their hand, following instructions as they paint along? Probably not many, but when I was a kid, I thought there must be a lot of people doing that.

Sophie has been "painting" for a while now, and would tell me that she is painting a girl or a boat among other things, but up until yesterday she has "painted" with Nutella or ketchup. So while shopping at Target yesterday, I thought picking up a couple 92 cent packs of watercolor would be a good idea. A few coloring pages printed later, and I had a couple of artists on my hands.

If I Could Turn Back Time...

I realized this on my own and have also had others point out to me that it's been a while since I've updated our blog. Skipped right past Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year. So, now I am trying to catch up a bit, hence the title of this post. I thought it could refer to how much the girls have grown, but I haven't gotten to the point where I am teary-eyed, saying, "oh, they are growing too fast, if they could just be babies again." Maybe that will happen one day, but right now I just don't think it will. It is fun to look back at baby pictures, but each day they are growing and able to do so many more things. They even help me with shopping at the grocery store, putting the list together, picking out things we need and putting them in the cart, and reminding me that we should get bones for the dogs, or "boys."

Mary's fish stick face

We traveled down to Georgia for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Both trips went pretty well (thanks in large part to our dual screen DVD players), except for some traffic delays coming back in November. Our Christmas trip was delayed leaving here by a day due to two feet of snow, and as I'm typing this now I hope we don't have a replay of that. There is probably six inches outside right now and it's been steady falling all morning.

This was the first year that the girls really understood the concept of Christmas and learned about the birth of Jesus, and Santa, of course. We have a nativity scene, and I figured why not let the girls play with it, it will help them remember the Christmas story. But there were a few times they were chasing each other, yelling, "My Joseph, my Joseph!" Baby Jesus visited a few different places in the house, and sometimes you would find a little fireman or other toy visiting the barn. I think it was mostly educational, though.

Sophie tells me about her candy cane

Sophie really enjoyed talking about all the stuff going on around Christmas time. On the way down to Georgia, while Mary was sleeping, we asked her what she wanted from Santa Claus. Without hesitation, she said, "A candy cane!" Mary said the same thing when I asked her later. So I called Grandma to make sure Santa would have some candy canes. Christmas morning, the girls looked past all the toys and went straight for the candy canes. Sophie had to have it open immediately and was so proud that Santa brought her what she wanted!

I'm not the best at capturing Kodak moments, so I don't have that many Christmas pictures to share. We had a few relatives and friends share some good pictures on Facebook, and there are still a few that I have not seen yet. But here are a few more random shots since the last post.
